Chrysanthemums - Showing your Blooms: (by Roy Fox) The most exciting time of the year for Chrysanthemum growers is show season. Blooms are carefully selected for exhibits. Flower stems are cut approximately 28" long for traveling. The first 2" is crushed with a pair of pliers and set immediately in buckets with about 10" of water in the bottom. To prevent flower damage while transporting your blooms, holes should be drilled in the tops of the bucket and used to securely tie the flower stems. By the way, the buckets to which we refer, are the 5-gallon plastic paint pail types. Upon arrival at the show hall, find a quiet spot in which to set up your blooms. Set the blooms in the following manner: One bloom entry, cut the bloom and stem 24" long. Three bloom entry, cut 2 of the bloom and stems 25" to 26" long, and one 24" long. Five bloom entry, cut 2 of the blooms and stems 24" long, 2 of them 25" long, and one of them 26" long. Allowances should be made for extra large blooms because the larger the bloom, the longer the stem. The ends of the stems should be crushed before placing them in the vase. Newspapers are ideal for packing in the top of the vase for supporting the stems. Tuck in a few leaves to cover the paper. Then attach the entry card. Place the entry in the appropriate class and the rest is up to the judges.
